December 30: India has decided to lift a ban imposed on export of onion. India had banned the export of onion on September 14 due to shortage in its domestic market. The move was aimed at controlling price hike of onion.
Issuing a statement on Monday (December 28), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India informed that the ban on export of onion will be lifted from Friday, January 1.
Director General of the Department of Customs Suman Dahal says that India might have lifted the ban due to increase in production of onion. Dahal says that the price of onion in Nepal will decline once the supply from India resumes.
The price of onion had skyrocketed in the domestic market of Nepal a day after India banned the export of onion.
According to the price list of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market, onion was being sold at Rs 60 per kilogram in the wholesale market on September 14. The price increased by 99 percent in two days after the ban and was sold for Rs 119 per kg. Onion was sold for as much as Rs 160 per kg in the retail market.
The price was lowered to some extent after the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies took action against some traders for hoarding and selling onion in the black market.
Recently, the price of local onion has dropped to Rs 60 per kg in the wholesale market of Kalimati while onions imported from China are being sold at Rs 65 per kg.
