The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation says that the government had set a target of welcoming 2 million tourists in Nepal in 2020 but that did not materialize die to the pandemic.

Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai says that although the government’s decision to celebrate 2020 as visit Nepal year 2020 could not materialize, its focus now is to observe 2021 as a year for domestic tourism.

Although the government has not made any formal announcement  yet, it is widely believed that it will be promoting domestic tourism in 2021. The ministry has also started discussing the topic of 2-day holiday during weekends for promoting internal tourism.

The lockdown imposed by the government on March 24 to curb the spread if coronavirus had disrupted international flights since a long time. The suspension of domestic flights also caused a considerable loss in terms of flow of tourists. Although the ban on international flights were lifted on September 1st the arrival of visitors has not been that much encouraging due to fear of contracting the disease.
