October 5: Government authorities have decided to facilitate customs clearance of Nepal-bound goods at Kolkata Port by proper implementation of the Electronic Data Exchange (EDI) system.

Nepal’s Consulate in Kolkata will facilitate the importers to overcome lengthy and time consuming hassles of Custom Transit Declaration (CTD).

According to the Consulate, around 300 containers have piled up at the Kolkata Port after the port authorities made an online-based EDI system mandatory for the CTD process.

As the containers started piling up after the implementation of the EDI process, the importers were requested to submit documents online for the time being and in person at the port, informed Consul General Ishwar Raj Poudel.

"Normally, there are around 100 Nepal-bound containers at the port every day but after the number reached 300, we have been asked to opt for both online and physical documentation," Poudel informed New Business Age.

“There hasn’t been any complaint after the online documentation was started,” added Poudel.

The Consulate discussed the issue with the Kolkata-based representatives of the importers last Thursday, October 1 and suggested them immediate solution to the problem.

This is the peak season for the arrival of goods for Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals. Containers have been stopped at the port due to the hassles in implementation of EDI.

The use of online documentation is expected to reduce the time for customs clearance of goods but the importers’ representatives say it is taking longer than expected due to the complicated process of entering the data in the system and the difficulty in making corrections.
