October 5: The Tatopani border, a vital transit point with China, is all set to reopen from today (October 5) after a long disruption.

Officials of the Nepal and China had last week agreed to reopen the border from October 5. As per the understanding, the Chinese side had released six containers on Sunday (October 4) while 12 cargo vehicles have reached the border point to load Nepal-bound goods.

During last Tuesday’s meeting, officials of the two countries had agreed to unload goods coming from China at the Liping bridge and the workers from Nepal would be allowed to bring the goods into Nepal from there.

The workers from Nepal have been divided into two groups and they include drivers, helpers and manual labourers.

According to the Taopani Customs Point, the Chinese authorities have agreed to release around 800 containers that had been stranded between Khasa of Tibet autonomous region and the Tatopani border in the first phase.

Chief of the customs office Lal Banadur Khatri informed that 15 containers will enter Nepal on a daily basis. The customs office expects to collect revenue of Rs 10 million per day.

The Nepal-bound goods include readymade garments, electronics, apples, garlic, onion, cosmetics, toys among others, said Khatri.

According to him, preference will be given to bring perishable goods to Nepal first. Khatri informed that they will facilitate in customs clearance of goods so that there will not be any shortage during the upcoming festive season.

Chief District Officer of Sindhupalhowk Umesh Dhalak said that the border will not be closed unless the labourers involved in unloading goods test positive for coronavirus.

The flow of goods from this border point had been irregular ever  since coronavirus first surfaced in China.

The border point was opened briefly some months ago but had to be closed following landslides in Jambu bazar of Sindhupalchowk district on July 10. It was again opened but had to be closed due to rising threat of coronavirus.
