September 14: Imported liquor is running out of stock in the country due to the ban imposed by the government some five and a half months ago.

The government banned foreign liquor in line with its policy to ban the import of luxurious goods in late March.

Nepal used to import foreign liquor worth billions of rupees each year. However, with the ban in force, such imported liquor is running out of stock. With the festive season just around the corner, importers anticipate smuggling of liquor into the country.

The liquor market used to become vibrant during September for the upcoming Dashain festival. The production and sale of liquor used to skyrocket until November. However, the market is inactive this year due to the ban along with the measures to curb coronavirus pandemic.

The intention of the government to ban luxurious goods including liquor is believed to improve the country’s balance of payments and foreign exchange reserve.

Dealers have urged the government to lift the ban on import of foreign liquor stating that the country’s balance of payments is in surplus and the foreign exchange reserve has not been affected by the fear of decline in remittance.

They argue that the ban on import of foreign liquor would only encourage smuggling of the same products, especially during the festive season.
