April 10: The repair and maintenance of hydropower projects run by the private sector has been halted due to the ongoing lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Promoters of such private hydropower projects are concerned that the life span of the projects will be reduced due to the lack of timely repair works.

The operation of hydropower projects can continue only if they are repaired on a timely basis. However, if the projects are not repaired, it may affect their life span.

Kumar Pandey, vice president of Independent Power Producers' Association Nepal (IPPAN) said that if the dams need to be repaired anyhow later.

But, if repaired later, it will affect their life span and add extra expenses to the project, he added.

According to Pandey, continuous oepration of the turbines without repair and maintenance is harmful for the machines.

Project operators believe that March, April and May are the best period for maintenance of hydropower projects as there is less flow of water in the rivers and all units are not in operation.

However, the repair work of all hydropower projects have been halted after the government announced the lockdown on March 24 to control the coronavirus outbreak.

IPPAN informed that there are altogether 85 hydropower projects operated by the private sector and maintenance of all the projects have been stalled due to the lockdown.

According to IPPAN, this is the right time to do the repair works of the dams, machines, and other infrastructure.

The project cannot be repaired later as the flow of water will rise during the monsoon starting from June.

IPPAN informed that the repair work of the projects have been currently halted mainly due to the problem in supply of construction materials such as cement and rods because of the lockdown.
