September 3: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Bhattarai has said that the government will not seek an alternative to Nijgadh International Airport.

The minister said that the government decided to construct the international airport in Nijgadh after weighing different options. He said that the construction will move ahead giving consideration to the environmental impact of cutting trees.

“The trees will be cut so that there will be minimal impact on environment,” he said.

His assurance comes in response to remarks made by Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment of Province 2 Ram Naresh Raya, who had expressed his disagreement regarding construction of international airport in Nijgadh during a discussing held on the investment and modality of Nijgadh International Airport.

Minister Raya had said on Saturday that the federal government must consult with the provincial government about constructing the airport since hundreds of thousands of trees would have to be cut down to build the airport.

The provincial minister had threatened to take the matter to the court.

Studies have shown that the construction of Nijgadh International Airport would require the cutting down of hundreds of thousands of trees resulting in the destruction of biodiversity. Hence, many non-government organizations have voiced their concerns regarding the construction of the airport in the forest.

NGOs have also submitted a memorandum to the tourism minister requesting him to use the open lands available in Bardibas, Mahottari or Rajghat, Sarlahi, which are in the same province, instead of Nijgadh.

However, Minister Yogesh Bhattarai remains adamant on starting the construction of Nijgadh Airport within 2019.
