September 2: Police have arrested five Chinese nationals for their alleged involvement in hacking different ATM booths in Kathmandu.

According to police, the Chinese nationals were found withdrawing money with the help of cloned Visa cards from ATM booths of Nabil Bank, Prabhu Bank, Sanima Bank, among others. The latest hacking is also the biggest ATM heist in the country, as the hackers allegedly withdrew Rs 17.6 million this weekend.

On Saturday night, police arrested a Chinese national named Zhu Lianang while he was withdrawing cash through cloned VISA debit cards from an ATM booth of Nabil Bank in Durbarmarg. After interrogation, police were able to arrest four other Chinese citizens involved in the case.

Meanwhile, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has said an additional Rs 16.8 million has been withdrawn from ATMs in India using debit cards issued by Nepali banks. But, the central bank is yet to disclose the names of those involved in withdrawing cash from Indian ATMs.

Bam Bahadur Mishra, spokesperson at the central bank, quoting the information provided by Visa, said, “The hackers have been able to withdraw a total of Rs 34.5 million from ATM booths in India and Nepal.”

Mishra further added that it will take a few days to get the detailed information about the case.

In the meantime, Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) has said that the money of depositors is safe.

“The depositors are not affected by the hacking. But, if they are found affected, banks will bear the loss faced by the depositors,” said Gyanendra Dhungana, president of NBA.

Police have seized Rs 12.60 million and around $10,000 from the Chinese nationals. Police also seized 132 cloned VISA debit cards, 17 genuine VISA cards, six mobile phones, one laptop, one data card, and a printer from them.
