June 4: Nepal imported telecommunication equipment worth Rs 5.5 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. These equipment were imported by Nepal Telecom (NT), Ncell, Smart Telecom and other internet service providers to extend their network as well as for maintenance and upgrading their technology. Nepal Telecom, Ncell and Smart Telecom have been expanding their 2G, 3G and 4G services.

The equipment were mostly imported from countries like China, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and Korea.

According to the data provided by Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), equipment worth Rs 5.43 billion have been imported in Nepal between mid-July 2018 to mid-April 2019.

According to a high-ranking official of NTA, the increase in infrastructural development in the telecom sector has increased the import of the equipment.

“The equipment are imported for expanding optical fiber, broadband internet, and 4G service,” said the official asking not to be named.

“These equipment are being used more in rural areas than in the urban areas,” he added.

According to the official, the work of expanding optical fiber network in all the seven provinces has already started. Nepal Telecom and Smart Telecom have been extensively extending optical fiber network in five provinces.

Likewise, high-speed broadband internet is also being extended in the government offices, educational institutes, local levels, hospitals and rural areas of the country.  Spokesperson of Nepal Telecom, Krishna Prasad Bhandari, says that the import of telecom equipment has increased as telecom companies are working on big projects. Nepal Telecom has announced to invest Rs 21 billion in extending its 4G service in all provinces of the country within a year.
