June 3: India tops the list of countries that have made commitment for foreign direct investment (FDI) to Nepal. India has committed a total of Rs 93.70 billion investment in Nepal since the 1990s till mid-May of the current fiscal year.

Similarly, another neighboring country, China is hot on the heels of India with commitment of Rs 83.67 FDI to Nepal.

According to a report prepared by Nepal Rastra Bank, the first official record of FDI flow to Nepal was in 1951/52 when the Nepal Commercial Corporation was set up as a joint venture with 67 percent equity participation from Indian investors. According to the central bank, there were few cases of foreign investment and technology transfer prior to 1980.

Likewise, Nepal started getting foreign investment from China only after 1990.

The government has categorized eight different sectors for foreign investment in the country. Among them, construction, production, energy and service sectors get more investment commitment from India. Similarly, China leads the list of countries committing investment in sectors like quarrying, tourism, information technology and agriculture and forestry.

Due to the keen interest in hydropower sector of the country by both India and China, it is hard to say which country will be the major investor in Nepal as a single project in this sector receives huge investment.

According to the Investment Board of Nepal, a single hydropower project with capacity more than 50 megawatts can fetch over Rs 10 billion investment. In the recent years, China seems keen on investment in hydropower projects in Nepal due to which the country overtake India in the list of chief investor.
