While presenting the budget for the upcoming fiscal year in the parliament on Wedensday, Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada informed that there are around 1.3 million senior citizens in Nepal who are above 70 years of age. With the increase in the senior citizens’ allowance, the monthly expenditure under this title will be Rs 3.90 billion while the annual expenditure will be Rs 46.80 billion.</p>
<p>
Likewise, the social security allowance for single women has also been increased by Rs 1,000. From July 17, they will receive Rs 2,000 as social security allowance.</p>
<p>
According to the government data, a total of 2,810,195 citizens are getting social security allowance in the country.</p>
<p>
The Social Security Act, 2017 has mentioned that senior citizens, people living below the poverty line, terminally disabled, disabled, single women, people from indigenous community, children shall be provided with social security allowance.</p>
<p>
According to the provisions in the Act, in order to receive the allowance senior citizens from the Dalit community and single women should be 60 years while other senior citizens need to be 70 years. Senior citizens (70 years), Dalit senior citizen (60 years), senior citizen from Karnali Province (60 years) and single women (60 years) have been receiving social security allowance.</p>
<p>
According to the budget announced for the fiscal year 2019/20, the government has decided to provide health insurance of up to 100,000 for senior citizens as well as single women.</p>
