May 31: Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada has defended the government’s decision to increase the budget for the Constituency Development Fund. The government had increased the fund provided to each elected lawmaker under the first-past-the-post category from Rs 40 million to Rs 60 million.</p>
<p>
“The government cannot deprive the people’s representatives from development budget,” said Khatiwada, adding, “We chose a system with elected representatives who took part in the election with the agenda of development.”</p>
<p>
Speaking at an interaction held at the Ministry of Finance, Minister Khatiwada said, “People’s representatives are the ones who represent the people’s desire, their mandate.”</p>
<p>
Finance Minister Khatiwada said that the elected lawmakers have been given the authority only to select and monitor the development projects under the local level infrastructure development partnership programme while the implementation of the projects will be done by the local levels.</p>
<p>
He further said that everyone must be careful not to allow the misuse of the funds allocated for the constituency development.</p>
<p>
“How can the people participate without the participation of their elected representatives?” questioned Khatiwada.</p>
