May 27: The sale of “unhygienic” Indian edible oil in the markets of Nepalgunj has gone unchecked despite the government’s ban on importing the oil from across the border. The government had imposed a ban on import of Indian edible oil since fiscal year 2017/18 due to the poor quality of the oil.

Despite the ban, Indian oil is smuggled into Nepal and openly sold in the market in border towns.

Indian oil brands including Chakra, Tulsi, Sunlite, Bail Kohlu, Sunmoon, Fortune and Tadka  are openly sold in the markets in Nepalgunj.

Group of smugglers are illegally smuggling the unhygienic Indian oil in large numbers from Rupaidiya, a neighboring town in India just across the border.

Pradeep Berma, a local grocery shopkeeper in Nepalgunj, says that the smugglers pay as much as Rs 10 per litre to unsuspecting individuals coming to Nepalgunj from Rupaidiya for smuggling oil.

Smugglers are bringing in almost 2000 liters of inconsumable oil in a daily basis from across the border, Berma told New Business Age.

Sumit Chaudhary, a retailer in Rupaidiya, says that the locals in Rupaidiya are importing Nepali oils because of the unhygienic condition of Indian oil.

Bishwa Prakash Sharma, a resident of Nepalgunj ward number one, confirmed that the oil brought from across the border to be unhygienic and adulterated and urged the administration to ban the import of such oil.

Illegal supply of banned Indian oils has been affecting the business of the local oils produced in Nepal.
