May 27: China is making final preparations to resume the Tatopani customs point in Sindhupalchowk district from May 31. However, the traders doubt smooth and effective operation of the customs point as the Nepali side is yet to complete the construction of infrastructure.

The customs point, which has remained shut since four years due to damages caused by the devastating earthquakes of 2015, is being reconstructed in both the Nepali and Chinese sides. China agreed to reopen the vital border due to the frequent requests from Nepal. However, Nepal seems ill-prepared to reopen the trade route.

“Although China is preparing to resume the customs point, there remain lots of works to be done from Nepal’s side,” said Naresh Katuwal, president of National Micro Entrepreneurs Federation Nepal (NMEFEN). He further said, “Because of this, it will take some more time to resume the customs point.”

Tatopani Customs Officer Krishna Basnet also confessed that some of the technical works are left to be accomplished. “All the preparations for resuming the customs point have been completed. The Chinese government has also constructed a dry port,” said Basnet adding, “But, works like internet connection and furnishing yet to be done.” According to him, furniture required for the dry port will be made available by the Chinese side.

According to NMEFEN’s Vice President Rukmini Sedhai, though the customs point will reopen soon, it will be difficult to import goods through the customs due to lack of proper infrastructure and system.
