May 27: A market monitoring team in Pyuthan has found rampant sale of date-expired food in the district.

A recent inspection carried out jointly by the Tulsipur office of the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC); Consumers’ Welfare and Protection Committee, Bhairahawa; and local government of Pyuthan revealed the fact.

Prem Bahadur Thapa, coordinator of the monitoring team, told New Business Age that such expired goods were found in the district headquarters, Khalanga as well as other business hubs such as Bagdula, Bijubazar, and Jumri.  According to him, the expired goods including soft drinks, biscuits, spices, chips have been destroyed while fruit juice with near-expiry dates have been returned to the dealers.

The monitoring team also found that most of the shops were not registered, did not have price list displayed and were selling adulterated food. Thapa further informed that most of the goods did not have labeling while locally-made goods were being sold in bottles of other brands.

The team also found that a number of shops were selling tobacco and alcoholic drinks without license. Bibek Kumar Subedi, a technician at the DFTQC said that the owners of those shops were told to register their shops and run them in accordance to the law.
