The study conducted by renowned Indian interventional cardiologist Dr Rajneesh Kapoor who is the vice-chairman of interventional cardiology at Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, India, has cited spasm and inflammation as other reasons behind the heart attacks besides the coronary obstructions.</p>

At a press meet organised in Kathmandu on May 4, Dr Kapoor explained the findings that are based on a research of selected records of 1,025 patients whom he treated from 2016 to 2018. According to Dr Kapoor, four percent of the heart attack cases were caused by vasospasm and inflammation, and the patients of such cases may not require stents in treatments that are generally used to open arterial blockages.</p>
<p>
In medical terms, such condition is called Myocardial Infarction with Non-obstructive Coronary Arteries (MINOCA). Almost 90 percent of MINOCA cases were seen in women and young patients. Among the patients, 76 percent were men and 24 percent were women. Likewise, 34 percent were less than 40 years old with two patients less than 30 years old. Demographic classification showed 5 percent from Nepal, 3 percent from Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and 92 percent from India. </p>
<p>
The study population was treated using very advance diagnostic tools called OCT that provide 3D scans of internal structures that help in accuracy in treatments, even life-saving in few cases.</p>
<p>
“Most of the times if no angiography no blockages are seen then the patient is sent back home without any further treatment. This leads to missing out on complete diagnosis, which may leave patient untreated and at risk of another event,” he said, adding that the practice of advance interventional cardiology enables doctors to understand the underlying problems of the patients so that each patient are provided with the most disease specific therapies to prevent recurrence and improve outcomes.</p>
<p>
As per the study, 98 percent of heart patients from Nepal were found to consume tobacco regularly. “It is estimated in reports that prevalence of tobacco consumption will be 25 percent of the total population by 2025 and upto 40 percent by 2050. This makes hundreds of thousands of Nepalese population at risk of heart attack in the next few years,” the study warns. </p>
<p>
Other risk factor noted for triggering of heart disease in Nepal are alcohol consumption, hypertension, stress, physical inactivity, belly fat and diabetes, according to Dr Kapoor. </p>

May 6: Cases related to heart attacks are not always caused by blockage in arteries, a new study has found. The study conducted by renowned Indian interventional cardiologist Dr Rajneesh Kapoor who is the vice-chairman of interventional cardiology at Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, India, has cited spasm and inflammation as other reasons behind the heart attacks besides the coronary obstructions.</p>

At a press meet organised in Kathmandu on May 4, Dr Kapoor explained the findings that are based on a research of selected records of 1,025 patients whom he treated from 2016 to 2018. According to Dr Kapoor, four percent of the heart attack cases were caused by vasospasm and inflammation, and the patients of such cases may not require stents in treatments that are generally used to open arterial blockages.</p>
<p>
In medical terms, such condition is called Myocardial Infarction with Non-obstructive Coronary Arteries (MINOCA). Almost 90 percent of MINOCA cases were seen in women and young patients. Among the patients, 76 percent were men and 24 percent were women. Likewise, 34 percent were less than 40 years old with two patients less than 30 years old. Demographic classification showed 5 percent from Nepal, 3 percent from Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and 92 percent from India. </p>
<p>
The study population was treated using very advance diagnostic tools called OCT that provide 3D scans of internal structures that help in accuracy in treatments, even life-saving in few cases.</p>
<p>
“Most of the times if no angiography no blockages are seen then the patient is sent back home without any further treatment. This leads to missing out on complete diagnosis, which may leave patient untreated and at risk of another event,” he said, adding that the practice of advance interventional cardiology enables doctors to understand the underlying problems of the patients so that each patient are provided with the most disease specific therapies to prevent recurrence and improve outcomes.</p>
<p>
As per the study, 98 percent of heart patients from Nepal were found to consume tobacco regularly. “It is estimated in reports that prevalence of tobacco consumption will be 25 percent of the total population by 2025 and upto 40 percent by 2050. This makes hundreds of thousands of Nepalese population at risk of heart attack in the next few years,” the study warns. </p>
<p>
Other risk factor noted for triggering of heart disease in Nepal are alcohol consumption, hypertension, stress, physical inactivity, belly fat and diabetes, according to Dr Kapoor. </p>

“Most of the times if no angiography no blockages are seen then the patient is sent back home without any further treatment. This leads to missing out on complete diagnosis, which may leave patient untreated and at risk of another event,” he said, adding that the practice of advance interventional cardiology enables doctors to understand the underlying problems of the patients so that each patient are provided with the most disease specific therapies to prevent recurrence and improve outcomes.</p>

As per the study, 98 percent of heart patients from Nepal were found to consume tobacco regularly. “It is estimated in reports that prevalence of tobacco consumption will be 25 percent of the total population by 2025 and upto 40 percent by 2050. This makes hundreds of thousands of Nepalese population at risk of heart attack in the next few years,” the study warns. </p>

Other risk factor noted for triggering of heart disease in Nepal are alcohol consumption, hypertension, stress, physical inactivity, belly fat and diabetes, according to Dr Kapoor. </p>
