May 2: Om Prakash Khadka, a resident of Sisne Rural Municipality-3, Pokhara, didn’t have to migrate to foreign countries in the search of employment opportunities. Khadka has been earning Rs 950,000 every year by involving in beekeeping in his own village. Om Prakash has 111 beehives.

Khadka says he has earned up to Rs 550,000 in a season by selling 600 kilograms of honey. Honey is traded in Rukum at Rs 2,000 per 2.4 kilograms (dharnee).

Likewise, Kamlal Khadka, also a resident of Sisne Rural Municipality-3, Pokhara, has also been involved in beekeeping for 10 years now. He has been earning Rs 700,000 annually by selling honey in the market. Kamlal shares he has earned up to Rs 400,000 in a single season by selling 480 kilograms of honey. Kamlal has 80 beehives.

Similarly, Dil Bahadur Khadka is earning Rs 600,000 annually with his involvement in beekeeping business. Like Prakash, Kamlal and Dil, many people of the village are involved in the beekeeping business to make their living. More than 137 families of the rural municipality are involved in the beekeeping business.

According to Om Prakash, almost all the families of the village are involved in the beekeeping business and are making a good income from it.

“In the recent times, the village is known for beekeeping,” he added.

A farmer having just a single beehive can also sell five to eight dharnee of honey in a season.

The number of farmers involved in beekeeping is increasing every year. Om Prakash is the first farmer in the village to get involved in this business. Most of the farmers have kept Serena Bee. One hive of this type of bee can produce up to seven dharnee honey in a season.
