April 29: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organised the Fourth Earthquake Commemoration Seminar on Friday where participants shared their experiences and lessons learned on build back better (BBB) project of Nepal following the destruction caused by the 2015 earthquakes.

The one-day seminar also discussed about the history and updates of earthquakes and their consequences and recovery progress in both Japan and Nepal.

On the occasion, Sushil Gyawali, CEO of National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), said that the experiences of earthquake recovery process as well as the support of JICA have been fruitful for Nepal to rise from the effects of the devastating 7.8 Richter earthquake during 2015 which took 9000 lives, injured 25,000 people and destroyed thousands of houses and infrastructure of the country.

“The country was hit badly by devastating earthquake when it was in the phase of political transition and preparing for the federal system,” said Gyawali adding, “It gave opportunities for political parties of Nepal to narrow down their differences regarding the promulgation of the constitution. The traumatic situation taught political parties to resolve the political debates during that time.”

According to Gyawali, the country has been adopting the approach of ‘community mobilization’ like in Japan through which Nepal is able to reach to the present stage by overcoming different obstacles such as the economic blockade and election.

JICA Nepal’s Senior Representative Kozo Nagami, NRA’s Dibya Raj Pokharel, and scholars from Nagoya University of Japan and other representatives of JICA also shared their experiences during the event.
