April 22: Nepal Oil Corporation has started homework for the security of petroleum pipeline, which is in the final phase of completion. Only four kilometers of the pipeline from India’s Motihari to Amlekhgunj in Bara district remains to be laid. NOC Managing Director Surendra Poudel said that the security issue will be addressed soon after a board meeting of the state-owned oil corporation.

According to him, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has also urged NOC to sort out the security issue soon as the pipeline will come into operation within a few months.

“Petroleum products are highly sensitive substances. Therefore, there is a need for separate laws in this regard,” said Poudel. He said that the government is  working to this end.

According to him, the authorities of NOC and its Indian counterpart held meeting a meeting about a week ago to sort out the security issue before bringing the pipeline into operation.

India has a separate laws for the security of petroleum pipeline. However, Nepal lacks such laws as pipeline is a new concept for the country.

Nepal Oil Corporation is planning to hand over the security of the pipeline to Nepalese Army for the time being.

MD Poudel said that only four kilometers of the pipeline in Parsa Wildlife Reserve remains to be laid. According to him, the authorities are felling trees to lay the pipeline.

“We expect to bring the pipeline into operation by the end of June,” said Poudel.
